Budget: House in uproar over VAT rise from 17.5% to 20%
The Chancellor, George Osborne, was met with uproar as he announced VAT is to rise from 17.5% to 20% from 4 January 2011.
He also said there would be no new increases in duties on alcohol, tobacco or fuel, and that the rise in duty on cider would be reversed.
