Scores of people have been killed and 800,000 displaced by severe rains across southern China.

There have also been power cuts, collapsed reservoirs and widespread damage to roads.

Outlying villages have been cut off entirely by rising waters. Official media report that 500,000 hectares (1.2 million acres) of farmland have been affected.

An estimated 68,000 homes have been destroyed in flooding and subsequent landslides.

Dozens of rivers have surpassed safety levels across the region. The severe rains follow the worst drought in a century in one part of China.

With some services at breaking point, the National Meteorological Centre has warned of more heavy rainstorms to come.
