Royal Marine dies in hospital from Afghanistan injuries
The marine was fatally injured during a firefight with insurgents
A Royal Marine from 40 Commando has died in hospital after being shot by insurgent forces in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
The Briton was injured in a gun battle in Sangin on Sunday and died in hospital in the UK, the Ministry of Defence has said.
Next-of-kin have been informed.
His death brings to 296 the number of troops killed in Afghanistan since operations began in 2001.
He was injured while on foot patrol in the south of Afghanistan and taken to Selly Oak Hospital's Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, in Birmingham.
He died on Monday.
Lt Col James Carr-Smith said: "He was part of a foot patrol providing local security whilst engineering improvements were being made to a patrol base in Sangin District when the incident happened.
"His courage and sacrifice will not be forgotten. We will remember him."
