London to Brighton bike ride marks teenager's death

The family of a teenager killed on her bicycle in Sussex have cycled from London to Brighton to mark the second anniversary of her death.

French student Marie Vesco, 19, died in a collision involving two other cars on the A23 at Hickstead on 4 June 2008 as she cycled to the coast with friends.

Warning signs were installed on the route at the request of the coroner at the inquest into her death.

Relatives of Ms Vesco laid flowers at the scene of the crash.

'Vibrant young person'

Her family rode from Brixton in south London to Crawley on Thursday and arrived in Brighton on Friday afternoon.

They said they were staging the ride to celebrate the installation of signs directing cyclists to a quieter route.

A spokesman for the family said: "It is doubly tragic that it took the death of a vibrant young person and almost two years of hard campaigning for these road signs to finally be put in place.

"Similar improvements need to be made throughout the UK, particularly on and around busy A roads to ensure that cyclists can share the roads safely with other road users."
