Ash clouds and strikes have given hundreds of thousands of travellers reason to seek out methods of transport other than flying in recent months.

While BA has announced record losses, many ferry and train companies say they have benefited hugely from the recent disruption and a growing enthusiasm for apparently greener travel.

Mark Smith of train booking company Seat61.com and Julian Boullay of Marseille Provence airport compare the relative health of their brands of travel.
