There are not many places in the UK where you're totally guaranteed a wildlife encounter. But Rockingham is definitely one of them - its birds of prey are simply stunning.

In fact it's got some of the best 'nest cams' in Britain beaming back pictures to the visitor centre.

Essential kit:Walking shoes. Binoculars and scope.
Nature watching:

Fox, Rabbit, Grey Squirrel, Dormice, Fallow Deer and Muntjac Deer. Deer watching is best early or late in the day.

 

Crossbill, Siskin, Redpoll, Buzzards nest here, and the wonderful Long-eared Owl. Tawny Owls hoot at night. You may hear the distinctive sound of the Grasshopper Warbler.

 

Rockingham is a Red Kite sanctuary.

Facilities:Top Lodge, Fineshade Woods, is a new RSPB visitor centre which celebrates the history and wildlife of Rockingham Forest.
Access:

Disabled Access and facilities: Remember that paths are not universally metalled.

Getting there:

Wakerley Great Wood is signposted from the A43, nine miles northeast of Corby, six miles south-west of Stamford.

 

The visitor centre at the Forestry Commission’s Top Lodge, Fineshade Woods is signposted from the A43. It is located two miles south of Duddington.

Opening times:

Woods open year round.

 

The RSPB Top Lodge visitor centre is open throughout the summer daily, 10am–5pm.

Charges:

The woodland is free of charge.

 

RSPB weekend guided walks cost £2 per person.
