The Golden Valley is home to a number of wonderful sights - the graceful River Dore, the former medieval monastery Dore Abbey and Arthur's Stone, Herefordshire's oldest man-made structure.

It's also a great place for wildlife including Water Voles, Crayfish and Brown Trout.

Essential kit:Dress for the weather but be prepared - wear sturdy shoes and take a waterproof in case of a downpour.

The best time to visit is during the summer months. There are plenty of well marked footpaths and bridleways to explore.

 

Water Voles - hard to spot but look around rivers and wetlands.

Getting there:

The Golden Valley is situated in Wick near Hay on Wye.

 

By car: The Golden Valley is located off the B4348.

Bus: Limited services including route 39 (becomes the 40 on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays) between Hereford and Brecon via Hay-on-Wye. The bus route goes along the B4348.

Rail: Hereford and Abergavenny are the nearest stations.
Local trains run from Shrewsbury, Crewe and Nottingham direct to Hereford, which is the most convenient station for the Golden Valley.
