Physical description
Tonkean macaques have dark brown to black fur, with prominent brown/grey/buff cheek tufts. Their large buff rump patch contrasts with the darker body.

Distribution
Tonkean macaques inhabit Sulawesi (Indonesia).

Habitat
Their preferred habitat is tropical forest.

Diet
Tonkean macaques feed on figs, bamboo seeds, buds, sprouts, invertebrates and cereals.

Behaviour
Tonkean macaques live in multi-male, multi-female troops, with no formal hierarchy. They are active during the day, and spend their time both in the trees and on the ground.

Reproduction
The reproductive behaviour of this species is unknown.

Conservation status
Tonkean macaques are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List.
