The life span of the hoary fox is unknown.

Physical description
The hoary fox has a short coat. The upper-parts are a mixture of yellow and black giving an overall grey tone. The ears and the outsides of the legs are reddish or tawny. The tail has a black tip and a marked dark stripe running along the dorsal line. Hoary foxes have a short muzzle.

Distribution
They inhabit East and Central Brazil.

Habitat
Hoary foxes live in the grassy savannah on smooth uplands, or savannahs with scattered trees.

Diet
They mainly feed on insects.

Behaviour
Hoary foxes are active at dusk and night. Females often use old armadillo dens to give birth and rear cubs.

Reproduction
Females give birth to 2-4 cubs.

Conservation status
The 2000 IUCN Red List classify hoary foxes as Data Deficient.
