Rolf's career on British television has spanned over 50 years. Born in Perth, Western Australia, Rolf has been based in the UK since 1952.
Art works
Rolf Harris's love of art began as early as he can remember. In the mid 1950s Rolf's paintings were exhibited in the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy for two consecutive years, and recently he received an honorary membership from the Royal Society of British Artists. Rolf has exhibited his work in the National Gallery.
Rolf has done a number of art-based programmes for TV including Rolf on Art and Star Portraits.
Animal Hospital
Rolf presented Animal Hospital for nine years. He was passionate about his job, and received huge critical acclaim as presenter of the series. Animal Hospital was winner of The National Television Awards 'Most Popular Factual Entertainment Show' no less than five times.
A large part of the programme's success was due to Rolf's understanding and exploration of how important the bonds between owners and their pets can be. Rolf recalls the story of Floss, an elderly dog who was brought into clinic by her owner's son. "Floss was such a beautiful old dog, but had a very weak heart... Her owner had to carry her wherever she went. Vet John Vivanco and Floss' owners decided that the kindest thing to do would be to put her to sleep. The owner's son bent over Floss and kissed her on the head to say goodbye. Floss drifted off to sleep so peacefully. We all cried - I can remember it like it was yesterday. The sight of two grown men crying over a dog was quite something, and I am so thankful that it was shown on TV. It displayed so tenderly how close a pet and its owner can really be."
Recognition
Rolf has been awarded both the MBE and OBE and is a Member of the Order of Australia. He is Patron of PHAB (physically disabled and able-bodied clubs throughout the UK) and CHATA (Children in Hospital and Animal Therapy Association).
