Jamie Darling

Jamie Darling
Jamie Darling was born in Armidale, in New South Wales, Australia. He moved to Northern Ireland when he was 6, where he started playing tennis and rugby. Jamie went to Nottingham Polytechnic to study Sports Science, and became heavily involved in triathlon events. Jamie has been on two huge cycling expeditions around the globe, including one where he cycled from the Arctic to the bottom tip of South America.

Jamie has some acting experience and has been a reporter for the Holiday Show. He reported for Animal Hospital alongside Rolf for the fourth time in the 2003 series.

There have been many highlights for the intrepid reporter in the time he has spent with the Animal Hospital team.

His first story involved the rescue of two kittens that had become trapped behind a toilet. Under the guidance of the RSPCA’s Animal Collection Officer, Sue Briggs, Jamie proceeded to dismantle the toilet in order to reach the trembling kittens. They had wedged themselves into a hard-to-reach spot, but after the toilet (and most of the surrounding wall!) had been taken apart by a determined Jamie, the kittens eventually managed to climb out of the hole, safe and sound. This wonderful story marked just the beginning of Jamie’s animal adventures.

Since then, Jamie has been lucky enough to work alongside Animal Collection Officers and Inspectors in countless RSPCA animal rescues. Each day has a surprise in store for Jamie and the rest of the team!

Jamie relishes the opportunities work gives him to travel abroad. He has reported on the Kabul Zoo in Afghanistan, home of Marjan the lion; from Spain with a Mancunian alligator; and from Norway where he met Keiko the killer whale. Jamie has twice travelled to Sarajevo to visit Mustafa Mrkulic who runs a shelter for stray animals in the city.

For Jamie one of the most satisfying aspects of the job is following the people who are striving to make a difference to the welfare of animals, whether it’s a killer whale like Keiko or an orphaned hedgehog. “I never fail to be astonished with what walks, hops, crawls, swims, or scampers among our gardens, down our streets, and in our fields. And I never cease to be amazed by the people who devote themselves to their care.”
