Mid Year things tended to quieten down on the filming front as teams began to access what they'd achieved and focus on what was still to be done.
The wildebeest rut
In the Serengeti, Tanzania, the white-bearded wildebeest are most likely to breed in May or June. The timing depends totally on the weather, availability of food and the animals condition, but, whenever it happens, all the mature animals come into breeding condition at the same time. The total wildebeest population is about 1.7 million which means there's a lot of noise from crowds of excited animals. Breeding males bellow and grunt to advertise their presence, see off rivals and round up females to keep them from walking away. Added to this, are the frantic calls of calves and females who've been separated from each other in the great confusion. The result is a wonderous hormone-induced cacophony.
