As the English Summer began to warm up, so did our schedule. The office was buzzing with trips to every corner of Africa.
The Virungas are a chain of volcanic mountains that run along the border of Rwanda and Uganda. They're one of the last strongholds of the mountain gorilla. Cameraman Martyn Colbeck hiked off into thick jungle with consultant Ian Redmond and local guides. Listen to Martyn's audio diary account of his first sighting of a gorilla.
Meanwhile "Jungles" producer Andrew Murray and assistant producer Anna Mike were heading off with their crew to another jungle in the heart of Central Africa. Equatorial Guinea saw few tourists let alone film crews and so the challenge was on, but jungles are always tricky places to work. Read an extract from cameraman Richard Kirby's trip diary.
Watch this short video of Richard Kirby and James Aldred to see how tricky getting the camera into position can be. At the same waterfall location, radio control expert Geoff Bell rigged up his heli-cam to film over the edge of the falls. Geoff shows us how it's done. Working in jungles was a new experience for Producer Andrew Murray. He writes about the challenges he faced on a daily basis.
Watch video of Andrew demonstrating the use of the bosun's chair to get up into the tree canopy. Sometimes, as this video shows, and Assistant Producer Anna Mike found out, you just have to trust that the locals know what they are doing !!
