Q:
When there is so much poverty, why should people care about wildlife?
Dr Richard Leakey
"I understand completely that people who haven’t got a square meal can hardly be expected to sympathise with spending public money on looking after animals. But by the same token, if responsible government doesn’t ensure the environmental health of a country for tomorrow, if we allow destruction of grazing and destruction of soil, and destruction of forests and elimination of wildlife what will the people of tomorrow and the day after tomorrow have and the poverty we have today will be 100 fold worse. And I think a responsible government has got to recognise that in the short term sacrifice will be necessary for the greater good of the majority in times ahead."
