Tropical Orchids:
Orchids are probably the most exotic-looking plant species anywhere. Because of high demand and popularity (up to ten million plants produced annually), commercially grown orchids can be bought very cheaply, many of them being produced in Holland or Malaysia. But some collectors demand to have the rarest and most unusual kinds of orchid, so collectors will go to extreme lengths to get them, often putting the whole species at risk due to over harvesting. Around two million wild orchids are taken from the wild each year, and some orchids are so rare that the collection of a few individuals will actually threaten the species with extinction. There are even stories of people collecting as many individual plants of an orchid species and then destroying the remaining habitat to cause the species to become extinct, thereby driving the value of those few specimens sky-high. Many orchid species are easy to keep and legally traded and can give tremendous enjoyment without risking wild populations.
