Making Waves - Coasts
Cameramen Doug Allan and Tom Fitz are the first to film one of the most legendary but previously unfilmed events in the sea - killer whales attacking a grey whale calf. Californian whale scientist Nancy Black knew of this behaviour but had only seen one complete attack in 14 years. Over two seasons and for several months the crew, directed by Sue Flood, film in the deep waters of Monterey Bay where the attacks are known to happen.
By following the killer whales every day and with amazing luck, they finally catch up with them as they attack and kill a grey whale calf. Doug describes how emotionally drained he feels at witnessing and having to concentrate on filming this primordial scene for over six hours.
In Patagonia, cameraman Simon King films the terrifying charge of a killer whale as it takes sea lion pups right off the beach. The intelligence of killer whales is such that each pod of whales has its own shared knowledge and experience. Simon gets right under their skin and learns just how they tick.
