Making Waves - The Deep

Making Waves takes you behind the scenes of the making of The Blue Planet. DRVs, Diving Research Vessels or mini-submarines are key to The Blue Planet's unique deep-sea images. Skilled and dedicated submarine crews and state-of-the-art high-definition cameras produce images of a quality never seen before from the deep.

Cameraman Mike deGruy works with the Johnson Sealink mini sub (from Harbor Branch, Florida) and there's a guided tour of the craft from submarine pilot Dan Boggess. Mike goes down to nearly a mile on the sea bed in the Gulf of Mexico. The most extraordinary pictures come from a place known as the "Brine Pool" which is a bizarre underwater lake of superconcentrated brine. Not discovered until 1990, this is a completely new ecosystem totally independent of the sun's energy.
