Britain has thousands of miles of coastline, and more than six thousand islands off our shores - enough to keep even the most avid wildlife-watcher happy for a very long time! Start by wandering along any beach and taking a look in rock pools; or visit one of our many offshore nature reserves.

rock pooling is great fun for all the family: take a net and a small glass container and you'll be amazed at what you find; best done on a falling tide which reveals the marine wildlife such as starfish, anemones and other invertebrate creatures
coastal paths are a good way to cover a range of habitats, and often provide excellent views of the landscape
many offshore islands are only a short boat trip away: including Brownsea in Dorset, the Farnes in Northumberland, and Skomer off the Pembrokeshire coast; all have a wonderful range of wildlife including colonies of gulls, terns and other seabirds
in some areas such as Norfolk or the Farnes you can also take a boat trip to get close up views of grey and common seals
for the intrepid wildlife watcher, a trip to distant islands such as the Outer Hebrides, Shetland or St Kilda is a must - take plenty of film and seasickness pills!
