Chris Watson Chris Watson is a sound recordist with a particular and passionate interest in recording the wildlife sounds of animals and their habitats in wild places around the world. Born in Sheffield, England, in 1953 his parents inspired him on his eleventh birthday by presenting him with his first tape recorder, and after discovering that this battery-powered machine could also be used outside to record the sounds on a garden birdtable, he became fascinated with the potential of wildlife sound.

Chris worked in music production from 1972-1981 with the group "Cabaret Voltaire" playing keyboards and combining elements from some of his wildlife sounds into several of the group’s commercial recordings. The group released more than fifteen records and during this time he developed his keen interest in natural history and started to experiment with location recording techniques using more sophisticated equipment.

In 1981 Chris joined Tyne Tees Television in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and worked on features, documentaries and music programmes such as "The Tube" for Channel 4, and in 1985 realised an ambition when he went to work as sound recordist for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds Film Unit.

Chris is now a freelance sound recordist based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Recently some of his television film projects have involved working on the BAFTA award winning soundtrack for ‘The Life of Birds’ with Sir David Attenborough, recording monkeys in Belize, Kenya and Japan with Charlotte Uhlenbroek for ‘Cousins’ on BBC1 and last year being part of the leopard film crew on the BBC2 series ‘Big Cat Diary’ in the Maasai Mara. In Radio Chris has recorded wildlife sounds and interviews for ‘Nature’ and ‘The Living World’ in Africa. Outside from broadcasting he has performed installations, presentations and live mixes of his wildlife sound works in San Francisco, Stockholm and Brighton as well as releasing a CD of special habitat sounds from around the world ‘Stepping into the Dark’ and more recently, ‘Outside The Circle of Fire’ - a celebration of animal songs and sounds in close up detail which won a special jury prize at the Prix ARS Electronica Festival 2000 in Austria. Chris’s recordings are published by ‘Touch Music’ in London.
