Southern fur seals

There are eight species of fur seal in this genus. Although they are called southern fur seals, one species is found off Mexico and California, and another in the Galapagos.

Species

  • Antarctic fur seal (gazella)

Antarctic fur seals are one of the eared seals from the same family as sea lions, rather than one of the true seals like the common seal seen in the UK. Antarctic fur seals feast primarily on tiny krill, but they also hunt fish and squid.

  • Brown fur seal (pusillus)

Brown fur seals are one of the larger fur seals and rather similar to many sealions. There are two sub-species the South African or Cape fur seal, and the Australian fur seal of south eastern Australia and Tasmania.

  • Galápagos fur seal (galapagoensis)

These are the smallest of all fur seals, but have the longest nursing period of all, as pups remain with their mother from 2 to 3 years..
