The blue tit chicks are growing at a rapid rate. It is not surprising... with a constant home delivery of juicy green catepillars, sunflower seeds and an assortment insects.

A minty fresh nest

The mother blue tit has been cafefully picking mint leaves for her baby chicks' nest. The mint leaves are used to line the nest and are believed to have anti-bacterial properties which will help protect the chicks from infection. We've never seen this behaviour before on Springwatch.

Happy family

Female blue tit and her nine chicks

The female blue tit has reduced the number of food parcels - down to 20 per hour. She may be tired (it has been a long few days) or having to forage further afield.

Caterpillar lunch

The nine hungry blue tit chicks are keeping their parents very busy - averaging 36 feeds per hour. Both parents are active with the feeding schedule and keeping the nest in order by removing the faecal sacs (bird nappies).

About

In 2010 Springwatch followed a family of blue tits, a first for Pensthorpe. Follow the highs and lows of parenthood as the family of nine chicks prepare to fly the nest. Watch the story unfold here.

The colourful blue tit is a universal garden visitor. With its ornamental blue plumage, it is a firm favourite on bird tables up and down the country. Blue tits are extremely social birds and are often spotted in flocks of up to 20. Blue tits diets mainly consist of seeds, nuts, catepillars and insects.
