The open ocean is called the pelagic realm. It’s easy to imagine it as one big homogeneous mass of liquid, but there’s a great deal going on just below the surface...
Normal open oceans usually contain about 3.5 per cent salt by mass. However, the northern part of the Red Sea in Israel is about 4 per cent salt. This apparently small difference in salinity makes the human body much more buoyant than usual, allowing one to easily lie back and read a newspaper without expending any energy.
