Introduction What you'll explore Master the challenge Take it further
Your challenge
To discover how the seasons come and go and to learn how their passing has an effect on delicate ecosystems and food webs.

There are two ways to complete this challenge.
You can play the Flash game and experience the California Coasts, or you can play the Temperate Seas Quiz.

California coasts Requires flash 5 California Coasts
Take a year out to work among the giant kelp forests of California. See how the animal community lives there as conditions change with the passing months. Have you gathered enough information to protect the sea otters from weird weather and fiendish fishermen?

Play the game

Temperate seas quiz
There’s another way to explore the temperate seas (and it doesn't require a plug-in). Answer 20 questions on annual life cycles. The creatures of the ocean have evolved to cope with changing temperature and light levels and can teach us a lot if we respect their world.

Play the game

Measuring coastlines is a tricky business as it depends on the scale at which it is measured. The coastline appears longer as shorter rulers are used, because more small features and rocky promontories are included in the measurement.

For both of these, you'll only be able to see your scorecard and get feedback if you have registered and logged in.
