Introduction What you'll explore Master the challenge Take it further
Temperate oceans are among the most productive areas on the planet but they are affected by the passing seasons. For this challenge we're concentrating on one of many seasonal environments, the giant kelp forests of California.

Find out about the creatures of the kelp community and discover what makes some seas seasonal.

Species Factfiles
Our species files focus on the creatures of the kelp forest that share their home with the sea otters. Meet some other marine animals that have adapted to seasonal food supplies.

Infobursts Infobursts
Study the environmental factors that change with passing months and see how animals take their cues from the seasons. Find out about the man-made and natural forces that can upset the balance.

With a broad understanding of the kelp forest and its inhabitants, you’re ready to weather the California Coasts.

It takes about 23 litres (5 gallons) of water to grow a single serving of lettuce. More than 9,800 litres (2156 gallons) is required to produce a single serving of steak.
