Getting Started

Learn more
The Blue Planet Challenge is just the tip of the iceberg as far as learning about the oceans and the natural world goes. There are lots of opportunities out there, and if you’ve got the bug and want to learn more, check out the links below or call a free learndirect helpline on 0800 0150 950 for advice and guidance on further learning:

Distance learning
The Open University offers a short course which incorporates footage from the TV programmes along with a specially written course book, Life in the Oceans: exploring our blue planet

Courses local to you
Introductory courses about the oceans are few and far between, although there are many that cover natural history, bird and animal watching and ecology. Because there is so much on offer it’s worth spending some time exploring what’s available in your area, to find the courses or activities that best suit you. You’ll find your local library is an excellent place to start looking, with lots of information about what’s happening near you.

You can also call learndirect and talk to one of their advisers on 08000 150 950, or visit their website which has a large database of courses across the UK at www.learndirect.co.uk

The Worker’s Educational Association is the UK’s largest voluntary provider of adult learning, with many local branches. www.wea.org.uk

The University of the Third Age provides learning for older people www.u3a.org.uk

For more hands-on learning, check out the Field Studies Council, which runs courses at their study centres across the UK, many based by the sea. www.field-studies-council.org

For advice about returning to learning and a gazetteer section listing local learning centres across the UK visit www.dfes.gov.uk/index.htm

Another government site which helps you find out more about adult learning, courses and grants is www.dfes.gov.uk/adultlearners/index.shtml
