Distinguishing plants from fungi

Fern

Toadstool

Tree

Moss

Flowers

Seaweed

Mould

Bramble

Grass

Puffballs

Toadstools, mould and puffballs are all different types of fungi. Fungi aren’t classified as plants because they don’t contain the green pigment called chlorophyll. This means they cannot photosynthesise (make their food using sunlight) like most plants do, so scientists have classed fungi in a separate kingdom of their own.
