Corvids

  • Crows, jackdaws, ravens and rooks all belong to the family Corvidae. They all have stout bills and dark plumage. They are all excellent flyers and can often be seen performing in-flight acrobatics. These gregarious birds have loud calls and are sometimes seen in big groups
  • Members of this family have a reputation for being fond of bright, shiny objects and may steal rings and other jewellery to decorate their nests
  • Most corvids bury some of their food to eat later. Ravens hide spare morsels in holes and under stones and will even use their bills to dig a food store in the snow
  • Other members of the Corvidae family include jays, magpies and nutcrackers
