Pet TV was the first TV service in the world specifically designed for animals - not humans. It was part of a big experiment. We wanted to find out how Britain's household pets react to what's on the TV.
Animals clearly can recognise their own type – dogs responded most strongly to dogs on TV, cats to cats, and birds to birds. But what was interesting is that macaws could tell the difference between bird types – many responded to the clip of budgies, but the percentage doubled when the macaws came on.
The predators – cats and dogs, both responded strongly to images with movement, so were intrigued by the movement of the snooker ball clip. Cats went one step further – they were almost as interested in the images of mice and budgies as they were other cats!
Sound is also very important – the dogs didn’t respond to the fluffy toy clip when it was silent, but did when we added sound, and they responded strongly to the howling wolves.
Of the TV themes, Casualty evoked the strongest response, but whilst dogs chose EastEnders 2nd, cats definitely preferred the graphics and colours of the Grange Hill titles.
