History
Domesticated mice are descendants of the house mouse (Mus musculus). House mice originated in Asia but have since extended their range to all over the world, particularly where humans are present. The earliest domesticated mice were kept in the royal palaces of Japan and China.

Distribution and Habitat in the wild
House mice inhabit fields and areas associated with humans, worldwide. Other than humans, they are the most widely distributed mammal.
Behaviour in the wild
House mice are nocturnal and feed on seeds, plants, and insects. Females can give birth to 4-7 young every 30 days, but due to the high level of predation, most of the young do not survive for more than a few months.
