Mammals Up-close - New Zealand short-tailed bat
size in realtion to a human
New Zealand short-tailed bat

Overview

Nearly a fifth of all mammal species are bats. This often comes as a surprise to us because there are fewer species in the cooler parts of the world, and most of these are nocturnal, so we rarely see them. The New Zealand short-tailed bat is unusual, in that it has become adapted to living in a country that has no native ground-living mammals.
