Animals on the edge - Primates

Find out more about the plight of the orang-utans, gorillas and chimpanzees. You'll find species information in Wildfacts. Read books, get in touch with organisations and search the internet for information. The more informed you are, the more you will be able to help.
Find out as much as you can about the great apes and how you can get involved.
Draw attention to the plight of the great apes. Tell your friends and family about the situation.
Look for ways that you can support local people's daily lives in ways that don't conflict with primates. Perhaps that's ecotourism, perhaps it's by buying some foods but not others. Look into the work of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, that aims to balance people's needs with the plight of orang-utan and other wildlife.
Avoid buying products made from tropical hardwoods. If you're unsure, always go for wood which has been labelled with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) logo.
Get involved in a conservation education programme, such as that run by CWAF or Bristol Zoo. You could either volunteer to teach in this country or raise money for work with local people in developing countries.
The Jane Goodall Institute offers volunteer and internship opportunities.
