Introduction - What are the threats?
Habitat destruction
Many bears suffer from the effects of the logging industry and the spread of the human population. Bear habitat is either destroyed or pockets of forest are left so that populations become isolated from each other.
Hunting
Bears are hunted for sport and by farmers trying to protect their businesses. Poachers also hunt them for their fur.
Bear hunting is permitted in some European and North American regions for particular species. Quotas may be given that can stipulate that all parts are used.
Giant pandas are sometimes killed by poachers who sell the skins as highly prized sleeping mats.
Spectacled bears are targeted for their fat and claws which are used in traditional medicine in South America.
Although American black bears are not endangered they are still at risk from being hunted as trophies.
All bear species are persecuted because they can destroy crops, kill livestock or be aggressive towards people in their habitat.
Performing bears
Bears such as sloth bears are sometimes used for entertainment on the streets. In southern Asia they are trapped as young cubs and taught to perform.
Bear baiting
Asiatic black bears are used in illegal bear-baiting in southern Asia. Despite it being against the law, the bears are still used to fight dogs.
Bear gall bladder and bile
Bears are the only mammals to produce large amounts of bile (ursodeoxycholic acid). This is used in traditional Chinese medicine, although herbal and synthetic alternatives are available. Bears are hunted and killed for their gall bladders and other body parts. The Asiatic black bear is most commonly associated with this practice but other species have also been targeted.
Bear farms have been set up as an alternative to killing bears in the wild. Thousands of bears were trapped and are now kept on farms where their bile is removed either through permanent catheters or during operations. Bear farming is most common in China, Vietnam and Korea.
Poaching black bears for their gall bladders has occurred in the US and Canada.
Pollution
Polar bears are probably the most at risk from climate change and the effects of pollution. They hunt from ice floes and when these melt early in the year it's difficult for them to find food. They may also be at risk from oil or chemical spills occurring in the polar regions. Chemical pollution has damaged polar bear prey and the poisons move up the food chain increasing cub mortality and affecting the development of young.
