First Monsters of Rock Festival
16 August 1980
On a rain drenched motor racing course in Leicestershire in 1980 the first ever Monsters of Rock festival took place. Promoter Paul Loasby came up with the idea of a summer festival to promote heavy rock acts in the UK and managed to convince Ritchie Blackmore and the rest of Rainbow to headline the first one (alongside Judas Priest, Scorpions, Saxon and Touch). A few minor technical hitches aside (including a member of Touch allegedly swallowing a bee onstage), the event was a great success and 35 000 turned up to bask in the light of the heavy rock royalty. Now reincarnated as the 'Download Festival', this festival remains one of highlights of the rock calendar.

Such a fantastic line up for my first ever outdoor rock event.I have a pirate dvd copy of the Rainbow set from that day. Looking back it really was a good show and am pleased to relive it through the dvd occasionally. I still have my official Monsters of Rock T shirt which is still unworn but alas it seems to have shrunk in the drawer !!Any chance of the BBC screening the Rainbow footage from the day?A great day full of great memories.Glen Pimborough
My first ever festival......and still without doubt, the best.Simon Richards, Birmingham
I don't think it rained but it had as I do recall mud. Rainbow were sublime, Ritchie was in awesome form especially on Stargazer. April Wine were there as well, and I remember one side of my face was sunburnt quite badly. I also seem to recall bottles of Newcastle Brown that had to be left in the car.Paul Addison
A really great line-up. I do not remember it raining - that was 1981. Rainbow, Judas Priest and the Scorpions were excellent. Especially as Rainbow did Stargazer for the first time since their first tour. You missed out Riot who were also on. I also remember a BBC Rock Week special shown on BBC2 which featured about 40 minutes of Rainbow. What are the chances of releasing the whole concert?Kenny Stewart, Isle of Lewis, Scotland
We drove through the night from Edinburgh, set up a tent and opened a can of beer at 8am. Thats what you do at 17, right? It was a great event but I was new to festivals and didnt really enjoy the piss filled bottles flying about the place.
