Zoo TV Tour
29 February
After the backlash that U2 received from the disappointing 'live' film and follow up album 'Rattle and Hum', U2 took on board what the critics had said and decided that a radical change of direction was needed.
To help encourage this change the band travelled to Berlin in an effort to wipe the slate clean and begin again. They would begin working on an album ('Achtung Baby') that would be their most diverse and eclectic yet; everything from East German car manufacturers to electronic dance music became an influence. Bono said later that 'Achtung Baby' was the sound of 'The Joshua Tree' being cut down,' and it proved to be another massive international hit record.
The resulting tour, 'ZOO TV', was one of the most ambitious tours ever undertaken, featuring multiscreen video projections and live satellite television feeds, U2 bombarded the audience with audio and visual media. Less well known is the fact that The Pixies opened for U2 on the first leg of the tour.

I Have to disagree strongly with your intro on this page. Rattle and Hum (+ the excellent movie) are 2 of U2 finest moments. The Zoo tour (Celtic Park, Glasgow) is one of many times I have seen the band live and is easily the most disappointing (poor sound quality and poorer album). Much more representative would have been the Rattle and Hum or the more recent Vertigo tour. The Zooropa Tour, whilst spectacular was musically experimental at best. The political element was totally overblown with poorly thought out, executed and scripted link up ups with Sarajevo. The fans were totally bemused by the whole thing and wanted the band to get on with the music, which fortunately they returned to with the last 3 or 4 excellent albums.Alastair Logan
First gig I ever went to was U2 at Wembley Zooropa Tour 1993 aged just 14!It's about as close to spiritual music can probably ever get. That night Bono dressed up as Mr Mephisto and tried phoning Princess Diana. When I saw them 4 years later on the POP MART Tour, she had died 3 days earlier and they dedicated One to her.Neil, Norwich
I've seen them all, Springsteen, Queen, The Stones, Prince, Dire Straits and more, but never have i experienced, before or since a visual and musical assault on the senses like ZOO TV. The fact that a very strong album was its foundation really helped, but this was one of those Rock n Roll moments when everything just came together. I saw on it on the Wednesday and was blown away and went back a week later and it had the same effect again. You can never explain to people what it was like, you either saw it or you didn't. I watched the recently released DVD a few weeks ago and that opening sequence thar precedes Zoo Station still gives me goose bumps even after nearly 15 years. The gauntlet was well and truly laid down with that tour and no one since not even U2 themselves with the Pop Mart tour has been able to pick it upJason Hertfordshire
11th August 1993 1st of 4 Wembley shows ,Amazing show U2 at there best again, unsensored live Sarajevo live link up, East German Trabants hanging from the massive stage doubling as lighting rigs, Huge buzzing screens with information overload, TV Channel hopping phone call to Salmon Rushdie who unbelievable appeard on stage alter egos The Fly , McPhisto (Don't you miss the good old days!) and an amazing setlist: Zoo Station The Fly Even Better Than The Real Thing Mysterious Ways One Unchained Melody Until The End Of The World New Years Day Numb Zooropa BabyFace Stay faraway/so close Satillite Of Love Bad The First Time Bullet The Blue Sky Running To Stand Still Where The Streets Have No Name Pride (in the name of love) Desire Ultraviolet (light my way) Love Is Blindness Cant Help Falling In Love What a night what a show Zooropa is all over !Roger, London
ZOO TV followed one of U2 most accomplished albums Achtung Baby; there isn't much music from that era that you could listen today that still sounds bang up-to-date. ZOO TV changed U2, it changed rock music and changed the way media, in all of its various forms, manifested itself for years to come. I saw them in Cork on 24th August 1993 (supported by Utah Saints) and was absolutely blown away!!! The Popmart Tour four years later followed a less inspired album, as a tour it tried to be bigger and better, but I was less impressed when I saw them on 31st August 1997 at Lansdowne Road, Dublin.Pete, Dublin, Ireland.
Sensory Overload! But did the mammoth visual effects take from the overall musical performance? I think U2 treaded a fine line between the two. Luckily some of the songs were bigger than the stage! Ground breaking at the time but personally, I preferred the subsequent stripped-down "Elevation" and "Vertigo" tours!Andrew Allan, Ipswich
I've been a U2 fan since 1983 but the Zooropa Tour was the first time I saw them live. It was an amazing concert made even more memorable by Salman Rushdie's surprise appearance.gary ireland

While I wasn't eactly at Whembly, I did camp out at Tickertec on the Gold Coast for tickets to the Brisbabe, Australia preformance. No quite front row seats but the atmostphere was still amazing. As a huge U2 fan this was my first and last in person experiece of these legends!
