Norman Cook (AKA Fatboy Slim) and Simon Thornton's first album under their BPA (Brighton Port Authority) moniker is a rather daft yet loveable mixture of eclectic pop. Featuring artists as diverse as Dizzee Rascal, Iggy Pop and Martha Wainwright, I Think We're…’ is scattered with genius hits and a smattering of album filler.
Bumpy 60s rock/pop beats open on He’s Frank, featuring the growling vocals of Iggy Pop. It was wise to place this album highlight at the beginning. It's temporarily downhill from here. The dullness of Dirty Sheets follows with unsigned artist Pete York's screechy, monotonous vocal slapped over a guitar-heavy scramble of sounds that go nowhere.
Then there's ridiculous dance number Jumps The Fence. The break-beat-styled drums and bass are thoroughly contagious, as are the Macy Gray-esque backing vocals. It's the tried-hard quirky ''jumps the fence like a toad'' hook, courtesy of Conna Mockasin that confuses. Instantly jarring, the vocal bizarrely grows, much to your disgust.
Lashings of ska vibes follow on Should I Stay Or Should I Blow. Infamous house DJ/producer Ashley Beedle features on this feel-good number. Meanwhile, dance producer/ DJ Justin Robertson crops up on the cinematic Island - its dreamy melody feels totally out of place, yet welcoming, all the same.
More bouncy ska envelops cool cut Spade, featuring the excellence and soulfulness of Martha Wainwright. It is the brilliant Toe Jam that really shines on this diverse album, though. Singer/musician/actor/director David Byrne teams up with Dizzee Rascal to ill (meaning good) effect as the jump-up brass lights up the dance floor. Youtube the hilarious video: expertly shielded nudes shake their bits to the beats.
