Perfectly captures the sounds of 1970's black America.

David O'Donnell 2008

Curtis Mayfield was a highly accomplished singer, songwriter, composer and musician, playing bass, piano, saxophone and drums on many of his arrangements.

Born in Chicago in 1942, his career got going with the formation of The Impressions in the mid-1950s.

However, it wasn't until the early 1970s when he set up his own label Curtom Records that his Solo career really took off.

Considered a pioneering soul concept album in its day, Superfly's honest and at times controversial lyrics depicted the poverty and other social problems rife in many black communities at the time.

The album was an instant success in the US and to this day perfectly captures the sounds of 1970's black America.
