BBC Review

Show Your Bones is not a disaster but it's not a complete triumph either.

Nick Reynolds 2003-05-07

Karen O is tough and tender. "Men like me" she sings "'cause I'm a warrior". She's right, and the track "Warrior" where she shows her vulnerability, is moving and emotional. It's the best song on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs patchy third cd.

They've always been more intelligent, had more depth and more ideas than The Strokes or The White Stripes. But 'Show Your Bones' starts badly with three plodding, undistinguished tracks. Things pick up with the sexy strut of "Phenomena" which sounds like Led Zeppelin high on oestrogen. Other highlights include the wild rollicking two step of "Mysteries" and the gorgeous distorted guitar pop of "Cheated Hearts", while "Dudley" is the Cocteau Twins gone country and western.

Show Your Bones is not a disaster but it's not a complete triumph either. Has their bright star burnt out? Their next move will be critical.
