BBC Review

A soundtrack to take to your whisky-soaked, melancholy, western heart.

Morag Reavley 2006

This soundtrack is studded with gems. Original music is provided by Gustavo Santaolalla, whose credits include The Motorcycle Diaries and 21 Grams. It's eloquent and decently authentic stuff: the main theme is a lonely mountain elegy picked out on pedal steel guitar, while "An Angel Went Up in Flames" is dizzying fiddle fun.

But it is the vocal tracks which stand out. Teddy Thompson and Rufus Wainwright's reading of "King of the Road" is inspired, its angelic falsetto set off against a slouchy and exquisitely droll narrative. Wainwright scores again with his own "The Maker Makes", a melancholy spiritual in the best tradition of Johnny Cash, while Mary McBride is sweetly strident in Santaolallas' "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me".

A soundtrack to take to your whisky-soaked, melancholy, western heart.
