CYHSY won't be everyone's cup of tea.

Richard Banks 2006

Much like the Arctic Monkeys, Brooklyn five-piece CYHSY are one of a new breed of bands born from DIY dedication. Having sold close to 40,000 copies of their debut with no record company they're now signed to Wichita (home of Bright Eyes and Bloc Party).

Opener "Clap Your Hands" may evoke the Doo Dah Band, but don't be put off, for beyond the bizarre introduction lie some real gems. The captivating "Let The Cool Goddess Rust Away" sounds like the Arcade Fire overhauling Radiohead's "Stop Whispering", but it's "The Skin Of My Yellow County Teeth" that really stands out. Here, Ounsworth's Kings Of Leon-style yelps are driven by a persistent Postal Service beat while delicate, wilting guitar lines skip over the top.

CYHSY won't be everyone's cup of tea. At times, Ounsworth's vocal eccentricity verges on the incomprehensible, while album-closer "Upon This Tidal Wave Of Young Blood" quickly becomes irksome. That said, 11,000 friends on Myspace can't all be wrong...
