It is no surprise that Lucy Pearl went on to sell over 1 million copies worldwide.

David O'Donnell 2008

Lucy Pearl's self-titled debut was released a year after the group formed in 1999, producing one of the finest R&B debuts in recent memory.

However, this slice of high quality soul was not thrown together by a bunch of unknown amateurs. Lucy Pearl was in fact an R&B super-group put together by former Tony! Toni! Tone! member Raphael Saadiq, boasting Dawn Robinson from En Vogue and Hip Hop innovator Ali Shaheed Muhammed from A tribe called Quest as additional members.

The productions of Raphael Saadiq and Ali Shaheed combined the live instrumentation of soul, with the sampling and DJing techniques of hip hop creating some lush backing tracks for the vocal performances from Saadiq and Robinson.

With additional collaborators Snoop Dog and Q tip also featuring on the album, it is no surprise that Lucy Pearl went on to sell over 1 million copies worldwide.
