Born 1945 in Chicago, Hathaway built a reputation early as a talented gospel singer.
Moving back to Chicago in 1967, Hathaway started working on music for Curtis Mayfield's Curtom Records label as a songwriter, producer, arranger, composer, conductor and session player.
His first release after signing to Atlantic in 1969, Everything Is Everything, would be one of only three studio albums Hathaway released in his lifetime and is to this day considered by many as his most accomplished work.
