Zoo Brazil has been the current nom de studio of Stockholm based DJ and producer Jon Andersson since 2002, joining his previous projects Laid, Cuba Computers, Nars and Outcold. Zoo Brazil follow a deep techno path, with generous nods to trance. Working with partner Johan Emmoth, No Place Like Home follows on from Zoo Brazil Needs You and Video Rockets with another offering of warm hearted, ice cold music. The sleeve, a woman crushed by a mirror ball, signifies the release's intent – you too may soon, ironically or not, be bludgeoned with beats.
There's something inherently Nordic about this vibe; largely created on old-school technology, as the sequencers rattle away and retro 303 touches waft in, this is a glacial, clean, precise sound that sees everything in the right place. The throbbing kick of Sputnik is the very best on offer, while On My builds its wash of sound convincingly.
Andersson has recently written for Kylie Minogue (The One from her latest album X) and it shows that amid the repetition there is an acute pop sensibility underlying the grooves of No Place Like Home. With its occasional use of vocal loops, although not exactly trampling over new ground, the album represents a mature take on a still exhilarating genre.
