Play It Again: Frank Skinner learns the banjo
Sunday 1 April, 8pm, BBC ONE
Comedian Frank Skinnner is determined to prove that there is a top-notch musician lurking inside him, and he sets out to learn that notoriously difficult instrument, the banjo.
Frank Skinner's Musical Journey
Comedian Frank Skinner always wanted to be a musician but never had lessons in school, and got kicked out of his teenage band. Now he wants to show that it’s never too late to fulfil a dream.
He devotes four months of his life to learning the notoriously difficult banjo, and is entered for the international banjo championships in Kansas USA. As part of his musical journey he revisits his past, reforming his old school band for a day; he entertains Birmingham's senior citizens with his new-found skills, and even busks to the crowds gathered in Munich for the World Cup.
But it's far from plain sailing. Though Frank's love for the banjo and the country bluegrass music he learns to play on it grows daily, his relationship with his teacher Pete Stanley goes from bad to worse.
Just weeks before facing the judges in a world class competition Frank hits a crisis as his progress reaches an impasse which Pete cannot get him through. But Frank receives some help from a former winner of the competition and leaves for the US with high hopes.
