Rockaby Lullaby

Music to help get baby to sleep

There is no magic formula to get your young baby to sleep, or to stop them crying. But music used in the right way can help. Do you ever kick off your shoes and put some soothing music on to relax you? Well the same principle can be applied to your baby - music has the power to soothe.

Here are links to a few lullabies your baby might enjoy:

Lullabies from around the world on Radio 3's World on Your Street

Hush Little Baby
Skye Boat Song
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

 Tips
  • Music or rhythmic sounds can help to comfort newborn babies. Even repetitive noises like a vacuum cleaner or a car engine have been known to work - this has been linked to their recollection of the comfort of hearing their mother's heart beat in the womb.
  • What is your favourite music to relax to? Why not see if it has the same effect on your child?
  • Try the lullabies that you remember from your childhood - after all, they worked for you
  • Forgotten the words to your favourite lullabies? Visit KIDiddles' website - there are hundreds of entries
  • You don't have to be a diva, or one of the Three Tenors, to sing a lullaby well - your child will be calmed by the sound of your voice if it is gentle
  • Singing to your baby will strengthen the bond between you
  • If baby wakes in middle of the night the comfort and security of your familiar voice may sing them back to sleep
  • Babies love to hear songs that they are familiar with, so repeat lullabies over and over
  • For something a little different, visit the Punk Rock Baby website to check out classics like Pretty Vacant revisited in a lullaby style
  • Gentle movement, like rocking your child from side to side in your arms, also helps especially with very young babies -soothing and comforting for both of you
