Soon after my son got to secondary school he stopped playing the piano. I was so disappointed till I realised from his school report that he was still doing well with his music but with a computer not a piano. I don't really understand. But he and his teacher seem happy.

Music Education
In school your child will still be studying music, listening and developing their knowledge and understanding through the three key interacting elements of music education - performing, composing and appraising. They will:

Learn to perform and compose in different styles with an increasing understanding of musical devices and processes
Appreciate and actively explore different music genres, styles and traditions
Learn about traditional, and other, notation
Learn to think more critically and analytically about music
Work individually and in groups and become more aware of different ways of making music
Use ICT to create and arrange sounds

Every child is unique and develops at his or her own pace. The information in BBC Parents' Music Room is for information and guidance only and should not be treated as a substitute for medical, legal or other professional advice.
