Line-up and Artists: Van Morrison

Van Morrison played on Sunday. Check our line-up & artists section to find out which stage and who else played.

George Ivan Morrison may have the reputation as possibly the most taciturn man in the music industry, but to millions his music speaks volumes.

Born in Belfast, he spent his youth learning his craft playing in showbands (mastering harmonica, saxophone and guitar) until he hit chart paydirt in 1964 as vocalist with R 'n' B group, Them. After a move to the USA (and a run-in with the record industry that soured him against it forever). Morrison recorded Astral Weeks with top jazz session players. It was on this album that he fused stream of consciousness lyrics with blues vocal stylings, creating moving spiritual tone poems.

Since then he's dabbled in jazz, celtic folk and gospel, but still remains true to his R 'n' B roots.

Just don't ask him to explain it...

For a man carrying a 40 year grudge I'm continually astonished at the quality of his music
CJ Buckley Washington USA

Van should be a great way to end the festival - Rave on!
Anthony/London

I just prey he's in a good mood. When he's on form he's fab, when he's being a grumpy old git, not interacting with the audience and playing obscure tracks that even hard core fans have trouble recalling he's not! I'm hoping for some of the new album and some old faves to introduce a new generation to Van the Man. Fingers crossed he's in a good mood x

I hope Van plays some of his transcendent 10 minute epics, like 'Summertime in England' or 'Listen to the Lion' and doesn't just go for the crowd-pleasing greatest hits set...
Jonathan Galloway. Henley on Thames.

Van the Man. Probably not the nicest, nor most audience-friendly artist out there, but... Who cares. Van Morrison is God
Lisa/Amsterdam
