Line-up and Artists: The Undertones

The Undertones played on Friday. Check our line-up & artists section to find out which stage and who else played.

Forget McFly and Busted, these boys from Londonderry are the real poptastic punk deal.

Formed in 1975 they eschewed the politically fractious background of their birthplace and turned their skills to crafting buzzy bursts of adolescent angst. Plucked from indie obscurity thanks to John Peel's championing of their first single - "Teenage Kicks" - they quickly produced a succession of chart favourites such as "Jimmy Jimmy", "My Perfect Cousin" and "Wednesday Week" that saw them rapidly develop into a much more sophisticated unit. Unfortunately, diversions into psychedelia saw the law of diminishing returns kick in and by 1983 they were no more, and the core songwriting team of the O'Neill brothers formed the more political That Petrol Emotion.

Now they're back - sadly without the distinctive warbly vocal chords of Feargal Sharkey, but still as exciting as ever!

Comments on The Undertones

Anyone lucky enough to be at Glastonbury to see the Undertones will be highly impressed. Having seen them several times recently, the new singer Paul McCloone is equally as good if not better than Feargal and they are a great band, with excellent new material.
John - Huddersfield

I saw the band recently and they blew me away. Don't miss them at Glastonbury. I have seen hundreds of bands over the years but NOTHING compared to the experience of seeing The Undertones live
Kevin, London

I didn't realise the fantastic Undertones were playing at Glastonbury otherwise I would have gone down in the torrential rain just to hear their magical lyrics and timeless tunes.
Eileen Wynne , London.

Why is ok to have clapped out Echo n the Bunnymen and not so New Order on the telly, but we dont get to see the mighty Undertones?? Probably one of the most influential of all punk bands..
Bob Gray Burnley Lancs

We've been watching the telly & haven't seen anything of the Undertones. Did they do 'Teenage Kicks' & was it good?
Chris, Cawley

Brilliant group, puts todays wannabe punks to shame!
James Wallis, KINGS LYNN

How disappointing it is that the BBC didn't feel the need to cover the Undertones performance on TV.
Tom Green, North Lincolnshire

Feargal Sharkey is not missed at all and I'm fed up reading that he is. They are still the best band to ever come from Ireland bar none. Get the new album out quick!
Frank, London
