Line-up and Artists: Brian Wilson

Brian Wilson played on Sunday. Check our line-up & artists section to find out which stage and who else played.

"I wanted to write music that made other people feel good"

You'd be hard pushed to find a performer that encapsulated more the spirit of Glastonbury. The genius behind the Surf group Beach Boys however has been a troubled soul.

Fortunately Wilson's demons seem to be behind him and he's been back touring with sixties masterpiece 'Smile'. When you see him perform live it's not his voice your blown away by but more the fact that this is a rock 'n' pop legend. Moreover he's been through it (apparently he even had to relearn the words to his own songs such was the extent of his breakdown) but there he is now in front of you and genuinely giving out Good Vibrations.

Comments on Brian Wilson

David from Rotehrham
Am I the only person who thought that Brian Wilson drifted in and out of lucidity?? From where we were we wern't convinced he was singing most of time.....was it the backing singer covering for him? Why did the cameras spend so little time focussed on Brian Wilson?

Chris Knight Tisbhelf
He may look uncomforatble at times performing but he has proved his genuis, most musicians since have benefited from his writing, arranging and producing. His music is easy listening and captures sunshine. His music is total perfection, the vocals are just instruments that complete the sound. His band, as were the Beach Boys, are superb vocally.

Zena, Somerset
Wow. Sublime music in the perfect setting, and thanks for bringing the Californian weather with you, Brian!

Ttian from Leicester
Back from Glasto and Brian rocked. He didn't look very well. Brian didn't do the Falsetto yesterday on Help me Rhonda. He was also very keen to get off stage, but he did rock.

Kathleen Massey
I watched you last night and you were the best I saw you in 1969 in sheffield and you have still got the voice hope health continue to get better Love and best wishes Kath Denis massey

...the fact that Brian's music is being rediscovered now gives me hope for humanity...he is truly the greatest pop composer of ur time....

Johnny Lighthands from London
Brian Wilson at the 'bury! - The sun came out, the mud dried up, a surf dude rode the waves of the crowd, and Brian and his band played us his collection of surf-pop wonders. "gotta keep those, loving good, vibrations a-happening!!!"

Mark from Tilbury
Brian Wilson quite simply done what Queen did at Live Aid. He performed the perfect set for the occasion and blew everybody else away. What a performance

Alan, Preston
Thanks BBC4 for showing so much of Brian's set - it would certainly merit a screening on either BBC1 or BBC 2. From what I've seen, Brian and the band were the stars of the whole festival - what a brilliant set.

Laura, Plymouth
Just look at the size of the crowd which was there for Brian's concert. I agree with the poster who said he should have headlined on Sunday (I mean, Basement Jaxx????), but then again perhaps it was fitting that Brian's show was performed when the sun was still shining! You can't beat great songs.

Dave from Forfar
Brian Wilson Was a fantastic performance of real great music, that was the highlight of Glastonbury for me.Wish i still had my albums.

Adrian Bleakley - New York City
I am listening via the Internet, so sad that I could not make it. Recently here in NYC Good Vibrations the Broadway Musical had a short run. One evening Brian Wilson showed up and was dancing in his seat along with other patrons. The actors, were awesome recreating the perfect sound of the Beachboys, it was a pleasure working the show every night!. I will never hear Sail On Sailor, it was truely FUN FUN FUN.

DOFFY NORWICH

Easily the greatest and most talented performer at the festival (probably that has ever performed there) I'll be watching and hoping we get to hear some of Smile!

Michael, Hanau, Germany
Enjoy Brian! He acts awkward at times, seems happy to get off the stage, reads the words of the songs from a screen but mind you: He is absolutely great - SMILE!

matt lander, leigh on sea

John, "Glasgow" (as per SMiLE DVD!)
This guy is a God and his performances are heaven-sent. Even if you have to swim from your tent to see him, don't miss the opportunity. Catch a wave!

Jack Dean: Bristol
Everybody raves over Wilson's back catologue of music. For me, I would rather listen to one of his leading inspirations Chuck Berry.

Brian Robinson ~ Surrey UK
I am just so pleased that so many younger people will get to see/hear this music....that has lifted my spirits almost every day for a lifetime. Oh yes...and don't be shy....sing the lyrics/ sing the harmonies, just sing sing sing along even if you're at home watching TV!

Steve from Exeter
Awesome!!.....the only true legend act at Glastonbury

Steve WhiteonBlonde, Reading
Hairs stand up on the back of your neck when you realise that the man at the keyboard waving his arms about is indeed Brian Wilson. Brian Wilson for God's sake! Listen to the Endless Harmony album and take in Brian's falsetto backing Help Me Rhonda. That's all you need to know about the genius of the man.

JIMMY NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE
ONE OF ONLY A HANDFUL OF TRUE AND CREATIVE TALENTS TO COME OUT OF THE HISTORY OF ROCK AND ROLL

Neil Ross - Bristol
We've seen Brian Wilson three times at Bristol's Colson Hall: the Pet Sounds Tour, the Smile Tour and again last night (23 June). Each concert has been a complete sell-out with the loyal and highly enthusiastic audience up on its feet and dancing from the start! If you have to see one gig in your life, go to a Brian Wilson concert. You won't be disappointed. The man is a legend and his band is the best bunch of musicians you'll ever see. Talk about Good Vibrations…

Tony from Twickenham
I saw the Beach Boys at the Great Western Festival, Lincoln in 1972. They were legends then and even more so now. For all though who have not experienced Brian's music live, now's your chance.

Scott Cardiff
I love the guy. He is my musical hero. 40 years ago now since pet sounds and Good vibrations and its still timeless. Going and see him and his great band at the festival. :o) (Cardiff) FUN FUN FUN 'til ya daddy takes ya T-Bird away ;o)

SJC Tunbridge Wells
I can't be at Glastonbury but saw Brian on the Pet Sounds and Smile tours and also just last Wednesday at Hampton Court.... You are all in for a great experience! This band is like Class A session musicians but with tremendous heart and feeling... Party on Glastonbury!

Melanie Melons from Cyprus
I saw Brian Wilson and the magical Wondermints performing Pet Sounds live twice (both while pregnant!) and I literally had a lump in my throat from start to dramatic finish. Love you Brian (and I'm sure my baby daughter now does too).

Gri from Hitchin
Definitely the person to see, and the band to see - they are amazing. I went to see SMiLE last year and it was without a shadow of a doubt the best evenings I've ever had. One set of classics from Beach Boys albums and Brian's solo work, followed by ALL of SMiLE followed by eight or so of the big beach boys numbers. If his set is anywhere near is good as the gig I saw then people are destined for a rather splendid evening... wish I had a ticket.

Andrew Bloomfield, Crewe
Brian Wilson has the kind of legacy that the stars of today can only dream of making. Whether it's music production, songwriting, singing or playing the man could do it all and the fact that he's still around in this century is a gift to us all.

Tony from Liverpool
Brian Wilson and his band will undoubtedly provide one of the great Glastonbury performances - it is fortunate that so many people will be able to experience it! This will probably be the act most watched by other bands this weekend too. SMiLE on everyone!!!

Dave Smith,Bingley
The man is a legend, the music will touch your soul.I saw him last year on the SMILE tour(best gig of my life!)and going to Liverpool on monday.Enjoy! We love you Brian!!

john cave oxford
Looking forward to seeing him more than anyone else who is performing. He truly is a pop genius.

Paul, Bedford
His stage shows were great, the band is very, very good and the music has all the Wilson features; crazy chord sequences , unusual instrument blends, sistene chapel harmonics, and a some sublime songs. Perfect Summer I'd say. Wished I could be there.

ROBERT LONDON
Brian Wilson, brilliant-don't miss it!

Val Rice, Southampton
Brian Wilson is a musical genius. Underrated by many, SMiLE 2004/2005 shows the extent of his talent - and live he always ensures Fun Fun Fun!

Gary from near Cardiff.
Brian Wilson and his magical band will fill Glastonbury with good vibes p.s hope the rain keeps off.

Ed from Harrow
Most influential songwriter and performer of the 20th century, not to mention the finest act at Glasto this year, I have to wait 'til monday night in Liverpool to see him, but will tune into BBC to watch his Pyramid set.

Scott / Warrington

Odds On from Norwich
Brian Wilson'll be giving me good vibrations. For me he is the headline act, not Basement Jaxx.
