Line-up and Artists: Baaba Maal
Baaba Maal played on Saturday. Check our line-up & artists section to find out which stage and who else played.
Baaba has a thrilling voice and an ability to experiment with western styles while remaining deeply, passionately African. Live performances, with his superbly drilled band Dande Yenol, are magnificent. Alongside Youssou N'Dour he is Senegal's biggest international star.
He had humble origins, growing up in the sparsely populated town of Podor but after winning a scholarship to the Ecole Des Beaux Arts in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, he travelled widely throughout the country and neighbouring Mali and Mauritania, studying the traditional music of the area.
In 1991 Baaba Maal moved to London-based Island Records subsidiary, Mango.

This has to be one of the highlights but I doubt if many people will get to see them. I've seen Baaba Maal twice and loved every minute of his performance.
