Line-up and Artists: Ash

Ash played on Saturday. Check our line-up & artists section to find out which stage and who else played.

Tim Wheeler of Ash Perhaps the pre-eminent festival band of their generation, when it comes to playing in the Great British outdoors, Ash have been there, done it and worn the neckbrace (Mark Hamilton, Reading 2002).

But as the musical embodiment of summer, there is no finer place to see them than at Glastonbury – the festival they love so much they once played it twice in the same weekend, stepping in with a last-minute headline slot at the mud-logged 1997 do, despite having already played earlier in the weekend.

They’ll be hoping for better weather this time though, because when the sun is shining and the hits are flowing, there’s no finer band on God’s earth than Tim Wheeler’s crew when it comes to encapsulating the delights of rocking without a roof.

Oh yeah, it’s the start of the summer indeed.

Comments on Ash

Saw them live last year - utterly brilliant!!
Clare, Essex

Ash are brilliant! Every album has awseome tracks, and Tim Wheeler is a genius! I saw them live last year, and it was amazing! One of the best bands ever - keep up the good work! ( and release a new album soon!)
Melly, St Albans

I LOVE Ash, I have done for 9 years (since I was a sweet little girlie of 12 years old!) I have seen them live only twice, but every time I see them on the telly I feel so proud of my boys (and girl) about how well they have done. They are still brilliant and I'm sure they always will be. This Glasto 2005 set was AMAZING, I was so pleased they played A Life Less Ordinary and Renegade Cavalcade - 2 of my faves. Ash... I love you! XxXxX
Lauren, Falmouth.

I'm so annoyed over the lack of coverage! ASH are my favourite band and I wasn't able to watch them on the telly, which would have been a great second best...
Ronan Johns - Ireland

Have seen Ash twice live, always in an understated capacity, and they certainly rate up there with my favourite live acts. I envy all those who were there today and saw them!
Dave, Gloucester

Ash are the greatest band ever. Charlotte is very beautiful and has an excellent solo album.
Gary ,Kent

Should read I have NOT heard them mentioned!!!
Sambo, N. Ireland

I have heard Ash mentioned by the presenters of Glastonbury once. Are they banned from our screens? I certainly hope not. They will prove to be one of the best at Glastonbury.
Sambo, N. Ireland

I wish that I was at Glastonbury cause Ash are like my favourite band I just think that Charlotte Hatherley is a really cool guitarist!!!
Emily, Bradofrd

Although Ash are fab i suggest listening to Charlotte Hatherleys solo album its brill and underated
Bella, Fife

you have got to love Ash, they work hard and play good music, they have never claimed to be best band in world. but they will but on a show for all you lucky festival goers and im pretty sure by the end of it you will be smiling
Pat, Belfast

Why are basement Jaxx headlining and not these guys, who have written enough amazing tunes to fill 3 set lists?
Rob, Ledbury

Me and my baz both love ash
Bruce /liverpool

Ash are one of my all time favourite bands I doubt theres many people who haven't found themselves singing along, reminiscing about summer parties. Only thing that sucks about them this year is that I won't get to see them T in the Park is missing out!
Claire, Glasgow (Norern Iron born and bred)

The fact that Ash are below The Coral and Keane is an insult. What a band, Tim Wheelers knack for writing a great song is unbelivable.
Imran, Huddersfield

Do we still need Ash now we have The Subways?
SteveDave

Let's face it, very few bands have lasted as long as Ash. Im not a huge fan, but i can't help but be impressed by Tim Wheelers song writing. My kids (14 and 16) discovered the "Meltdown" album after hearing a single on Radio One. Now, both of them and their friends at school, are completely obsessed with Ash. How many bands can reinvent themselves like that ?
Adam, Birmingham

Ash are brilliant live - ignore the critics and make sure you see them!
Helen, Plymouth

Helen from Manchester, I'll be there with you! Ash are the best band ever, I've grown up with them from age 16, and the songs are still great. They are fab live, and this will be the 5th time seeing them. I do agree 1977 was the best album, but they're far from being just another indie boy band.
Bradford

Ash are certainly not underated; the best band from Northern-ireland ever!
Jon, London

Amazing! One of the best & coolest bands around
better-than-you

Am i the only person who thinks he can't sing?
Hull

Ash - the most over-rated band in history although the Kaiser Chiefs are giving them a run for their money...
Jay, Maidstone

Man, Ash haven't been interesting for years. They're just another droning indie boy band these days - 1977 was easily their best moment. Songs like Candy, Shining Light and Envy are so repetitive and boring.
London

I saw Ash open for the Bravery. I was there to see The Bravery really and Ash were just a nice bonus as I'd never seen them before. They were brilliant. So good that they made the Bravery seem poor in contrast. Here's to showing up early to gigs.
nic, wycombe

There is nothing like being in the crowd when Girl From Mars starts playing - everyone goes wild. It's a fantastic experience. Ash are a must-see!
Josh Richards, Durham

Ash are an amazing band, and i think they are very underrated, i cant wait to see them at glastonbury!
Basingstoke

Still look and sound like a 6th form band ... Tim Wheeler still has cutains!
Ned Liverpool

This is incredibly unfair. Of course Ash are THE band to see at a festival. Will my mates believe me? Will they come and bob up and down out of time to Goldfinger (also out of time) with me? Or...will they rant on about mediocre guitar bans and whine "shhyyynnnn-innnnng light" at me every time I mention it? If anyone wants to come stand with me at the front and help me mop up the tears of joy, please do.
Helen, Manchester

I can't wait to Ash - they are going to be great!!!
Surrey
